My treatment philosophy is
really to engage the patient and engage the
patient’s families in the medical
decision-making process. Patients that we often take
care of in heart failure have had heart disease
for many, many years– very complex medical histories,
procedures, surgeries, to the point that we see them
with advanced heart failure. So I think it’s very
important to understand where the patients are
coming from, what procedures they’ve
had in the past, and really that no stone
goes unturned in making sure that we’re not missing
any treatment strategies or approach. Next is to really educate
the patients and the families about the state of
their medical condition, and make sure that they
understand what’s going on and the complexity
of their disease, answer any questions
that they have, and really let them know we’re
here to take care of them. We’re here to try to provide
the best medical care and cutting-edge technology
in the world of heart failure. My specialty is advanced
heart failure and transplant cardiology. And so I take care of
patients with all forms of heart failure,
whether it’s reduced pump function or reduced
relaxation of the heart. Take care of patients
with transplants and Left Ventricular Assist
Devices, or LVADS, which are better
known as heart pumps, and everything in between. So people who may need temporary
mechanical circulatory support, are in cardiogenic shock
in the intensive care unit, and really all forms
of heart failure. I also have a special
interest in echocardiography and enjoy spending time in
the cath labs performing heart catheterizations, heart
biopsies on our transplant patients. And I also have an interest
in health policy and quality improvement to try to improve
the care of our heart failure patients, focusing on
reducing readmissions and improving their
quality of life. I think patients should choose
MUSC Health because we’re really the foremost
academic medical center in the state of South Carolina. We really offer a comprehensive
array of treatment strategies for patients with cardiac
conditions and advanced heart failure, whether it be
coronary interventions, electrophysiology procedures,
ablations or devices, advanced valvular
interventions, or if they need heart transplant and left
ventricular assist device. I think we are the
premier institution in the state of South
Carolina and one of the few in the
region that provides such a comprehensive array
of medical treatments.
