Heart Month – Heart attack risk factors

(energetic music) – A heart attack is actually
a block of blood flow through the arteries going to the heart. And this usually happens because there’s cholesterol in the arteries, and a plaque can often
break off from the arteries, and then blood can form a
clot around this plaque, which then obscures blood
flow going to the heart. And so to prevent this,
we can do a lot of things. We can reduce our risk factors. These are all really important to control. Exercise, you wanna make
sure that you’re physically active, at least 30
minutes of exercise a day. Make sure you know your cholesterol. Also, high blood pressure’s a risk factor, and so is diabetes. And then make a decision from there in terms of how we can
reduce risk factors, or if you need to be on medications. A calcium score’s actually
just a minimal CAT scan that you can have done. And what it does is it gives you a number, it’s actually a finite number of how much plaque is in your arteries. It’s quite a good starting point, and it’s also a good screening test, so it’s important to think about these. Any kind of change that you notice, talk to your doctor, or get to the ER.
