or as most of us know it, getting older, all depends
on how well your body can heal itself, and that
can happen at any age. Slowing it down, that is. Healing within your own
body is really the only fountain of youth, and
healing is only possible if the body is given the

like heart disease or cancer. Our guest today is living proof. Biblical chronologist and
broadcaster Michael Rood is living the best health of
his life today in his mid-60s, reversing heart disease
after a quintuple bypass, and he’s about to give
you a Health Awakening. (upbeat music) Welcome to The Health Awakening. I’m your host, Scott Laird. My parents recently did some renovations in their condo themselves. They moved furniture, they ripped up and carried out old carpet, and so on. My dad is 83 years old
and my mom just turned 80. They both had colon
cancer but are now living their best life because they
changed the way they eat, and in so doing, they changed the way their bodies heal themselves. Contrary to the opinion
that disease reversal can only happen in the young, anti-aging and disease reversal
can happen at any age. Just ask biblical
broadcaster Michael Rood. With a family history of heart disease, he’s had multiple strokes
and a quintuple bypass. But now in his mid-60s,
he’s changed his diet and is healthier than he has ever been. And he’s here to tell you how he did it. Michael Rood, welcome
to The Health Awakening. – Thanks, good to be with you, Scott. – You know, so you’ve had your share of heart troubles in the past. Tell us a little bit
about how that came about, family history, what happened? – Well, I was in my early
20s, I was a sergeant in the Marine Corps, I was
running three to five miles every day, I was eating
organic and fasting every, every month I would fast for a week. I would go out to
sometimes fasting 21 days. Very health conscious back then. But my cholesterol was between
600 and 800 at that time because it’s a family, a
generational situation. And my mother, my father,
it is passed down. And so this is what I inherited. And so it was many decades
later that I had not one heart attack, not two,
not three, but it finally got to the point, and as
I do my television program and travel around the
world, I just kept on powering through it, praying
through it, powering through it and I was able to recover from those until I went down and the doctor said there’s no way that you’re
getting out of here. There’s no time for
stents, there’s no place for stents anymore. All you have left is to
have open-heart surgery, and if you don’t do it, and I
said I’ve got a busy schedule. Can you just put a few stents
in and then I come back when I’ve got some free time? And he said no, you’re not, that would be medical malpractice. You’re not getting out of here
without this bypass surgery. And I knew it, I was done for. It was the end of the road for me. And so I had the bypass
surgery, I started doing better, and right back into my busy schedule. And then I went down again. This time I started having strokes. And with my schedule, I
was having to press through doing a television series. And so at the end of it,
I knew I had had a stroke. My vision was damaged. I couldn’t hold onto a toothbrush. There were things that were going wrong. I no longer could write because my fingers and my brain were no longer connected. And still, it was several
months later that I then had to have bypass surgery to get the, get my coronaries, excuse
me, my carotid arteries, and in the operation there,
I knew that this was serious. I knew that my mother woke up
from an operation paralyzed. She can no longer speak. Cholesterol situation similar to mine. And when I woke up, I was
blind, I couldn’t see. And so it was a fight to get back. I couldn’t walk without help. This was the thing that
really changed my life, Scott, because the doctor came in,
and I was talking about diet, I was talking about all these things, things that I’ve tried to
control and to be good at for a lifetime for the most part. And she made a statement. She said there’s only
one thing which is proven to reverse heart disease, and that is a whole
foods plant-based diet. And she said this, this is someone that in the medical profession,
she said it in a way that I knew she was saying the truth, but it’s like, but I know
nobody’s gonna do it. She didn’t say that
part, but I decided, no, if that is a thing that is
proven, I am going to do it. And then I started watching

not only listening to, the program, that I understood
that this was the path to go, but then I continued to
research and to really brainwash myself to fully adopt

talking with our guest, biblical broadcaster Michael
Rood, about changing health even in your mid-60s. And Michael, you said that one
thing that changed your mind was not only what you
heard from your doctor, but then you started watching
The Health Awakening. And I know there’s a few
guests that have really made an impact on your life. Tell me about the ones that
were really instrumental there. – Well, Scott, it’s one thing
to be told how to do things, but then you really have
to immerse yourself. You have to convince yourself. And you had, one of your
guest was Dr. Michael Greger. And his nutrition facts
really helped me to, as I say, brainwash
myself, listening to this as I began to walk, and now I walk between five and 11 miles a day. – Wow, now you’ve had some
problems with a knee in the past, and so how do you find that now? – I have had, sometimes
I’ve spent six months in a wheelchair because of
my joint problems and all. And now to have that reversed through diet and then exercise, but
diet was the first thing, because without the diet
change, I could not exercise. I couldn’t walk, I was constantly in pain. And now I get out and I walk 11 miles absolutely without pain. I use Nordic walking sticks. And after the stroke, I
couldn’t walk by myself. I had to hold on to my wife’s
arm just to stay on a path. And so my brain, my vision was damaged. And these are all things that
I’ve had to contend with now, because I didn’t do that which was right, then I got taken down a long path, and I had to fight to come back. And so Dr. Greger was one that you had on. And then Joel Fuhrman. And Joel Fuhrman has
excellent programming on, and so that’s what I started listening to as I walk mile after mile. And now as I walk hour after
hour, I continue to listen to their encouragement and
realize that other people have come back from things like this. And so this is the
course that I have taken. – Now I know that Dr. Fuhrman,
when he was on the show, something I asked him to
bring out because it is his signature piece of
information that he gives folks, is this acronym he calls GBOMBS. And that’s greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, and seeds. And I know you took that heart, and that’s what’s sitting
on the table here. Tell me about that.
– Right. When I knew that I was being invited, I pulled this right out of the freezer. This is a GBOMB. It was all put in as frozen
materials except for the beans. And then I do like a dozen
of these things at a time, and I put ’em in the freezer. And then on the day that
I’m going to eat them, I bring them out, I thaw it
out, I throw it in the Vitamix and I blend it up, and I blend
it up to where it will steam. It’s not boiling hot, but I
blend it up to where it steams, and this is what I drink, this is my soup. This is life right here. And because I started doing
this, and at one time, I went for over 40 days, no
solid food except for this. Of course, it is solid food. And this is what Fuhrman speaks of as nutritional excellence. Everything that’s in
there, from what I learned from Dr. Greger, the Indian gooseberries, that has lowered my cholesterol,
and it does it better than the statin drugs.
– Now let’s talk about that for a second because I know you had quite a high cholesterol. When you told me what
you brought it down to, I couldn’t believe it,
so let’s recount that. – Okay, now after a great deal of work, I got it down to 455. And this is after a couple
years, and now the last checkup was at 322.
– That’s amazing. – So almost half of what
the lowest I had ever been in my entire life, and it’s
because of the change in diet and not going through
the statins and all that. That is literally
crippling and has crippled every one of my siblings. It is very destructive to a lot
of people, including myself. – Now I know your sister’s
done quite well as well. She’s changed her diet for the most part. Maybe not to the extreme that you have, but she’s had a lot of good results, too. – Oh, that’s right, and
she’s lost a lot of weight. The doctors, the last time
she had a heart attack, they said there’s nothing we can do. Everything, all your plumbing is used up. And so she has been very
seriously on this path now. So just because you’re 60 doesn’t mean that it’s the end of the road. But it’s a fight, I mean,
every single day it’s a fight. And that’s why I say you
have to brainwash yourself. You constantly have to encourage yourself, and that’s why Health Awakening,
and that’s why the guests that you have had on, I
continue to go to them. So you are like the lifeline
that’s bringing these people in to bring them in front of us. And I have taken you very seriously now, and I know, your children are
all like world-class athletes and all, that’s great,
but when you hit my age, you think you’re a
world-class athlete still. No, you no longer can do it. But yeah, you have to fight to get back and get back as much as you can. – Now, I know that you,
we’ve already mentioned how you had, you knew you had
heart troubles in the past and things like that. But it had to come to a head before you really made a decision. Why do you think it takes
people to come to that point before they actually do something? For a doctor to say I’m sorry, Mr. Jones, there’s nothing we can do for you. – I think that we all grow up and we think that we are impervious
to any negative things, that we are eternal as
far as our physical body, that we can’t be defeated. And I really lived like
that for a long time. I know the three different
times I had heart attacks, and I didn’t do anything about it because I wanted to deny it. I know when I had the
strokes, the beginning of those strokes, I wanted to think I’m going to get over this. I don’t want to tell anyone
about it, and so I didn’t. You know, I can no longer hit
the buttons on my phone right. I can’t spell right. You know, dyslexia sets in. Things like that that were going on that are clearly the evidence of a stroke, and I didn’t want to admit it. I want to think that I’m
going to live forever. Okay, eternal life is one
thing, but this physical body is going to go back to the dust someday. But it doesn’t need to go as soon as how I was taking it back to the grave. – All right, so make the changes before you need to make the change. All right, well we’re talking

talking with our guest biblical broadcaster Michael Rood about reversing disease at any age. And like we said, Michael,
you are in your mid-60s. Take us through a day in
the life of Michael Rood. What do you do from morning to night? What’s your procedure here? – Well, in the morning I set out basically with a breakfast, breaking the fast with some oatmeal with
some blueberries in it. And that’s the meal that I have then. During the day here at the
headquarters of A Rood Awakening, we have a chef that prepares food, and we’ve gone to a whole
foods plant-based diet. Now we know not everyone on
staff is committed to that, and so we do have some
meats that are available. But when the chef makes some
chili, it’s got a little meat in it, I don’t eat
it, I don’t touch it. Anything that, as they say, anything with a face on it, I don’t eat. We do bring people in
from around the world I interview on our programs. And when they come in we go out to dinner, and there’s always
something at restaurants that I can find, whole foods, plant-based, that’s very satisfying. And so it doesn’t change
my life a bit there. But every day I do get out and walk. When I do a big 10, 11 mile
walk, then I take a break for a day and let my body recuperate. I found that that’s necessary. But other than that, I can
walk four miles, five miles, six miles every single day
without missing a beat on that. And I like to do that. – And rest is also important. I know that you like
to enjoy a proper rest and a hot tub for therapeutic purposes and all that kind of thing, and that’s all a very rounded picture, isn’t it? – Yeah, yeah. Being able to relax in the hot tub, and I keep the chlorine
level extremely low, it’s like the chlorine
goes in, and then when it all goes away, then I get in the hot tub. So it may take a couple
days to be able to do that. But living a less stressful life. I’ve been trying to take
the advice of people, realizing stress does kill. I never believed it until I
was almost dead several times. And then I realized, okay,
I need to listen to my wife. She tries to gear me down a little bit. But yet, we have so many exciting things, especially from the land of Israel, the archaeological finds, the
things that we are presenting, the real Mount Sinai, Noah’s
Ark and the remains of that that is still going on, going excavation. All these things are so
incredibly intense and exciting. It’s like I want to be here for that. And I want to continue
getting this news out that verifies the biblical record. – That’s something I wanted to ask you. So when you had your quintuple bypass, obviously you’re sitting in
the hospital room wondering, gosh, what is life gonna
be like after this? And now you’re walking 11
miles a day at some times. So you have all these exciting
things you wanna tell folks. I mean, this is your
forte, you know, Noah’s Ark and the Ark of the Covenant
and all these type of things. That’s what you teach on. So how has getting healthier
changed your outlook on your ministry and your work? – Well, I used to, after
these different heart attacks and strokes, it was like,
okay, I’ve gotta set a goal. I’ve got a tour to do in
Israel six weeks from now, and I’ve just had six bypasses. And so I’ve got to gear up and
I gotta get ready for this, and so I go and do it. And I figure, okay, if this
is the last thing I get to do in my life, I’m going to do
it to the best of my ability. And I’ve had several
of these things, Scott, that I thought, okay, The
Chronological Gospels, that particular season that I was doing, I got to the end of it, and
the next day I had a stroke. It’s like I keep pushing
and push as hard as I can and expect, okay, if this is
the last thing I get to do. Well, I’ve gone through so
many of those things now. I continue to pray that
I get the health back, and I really, I go
before the throne of God and I ask him that I get
more time to tell the story ’cause I love to tell the story. And the reality of the
story, I want people to take a drink of the
same cool, refreshing water that I received when I was a teenager. And I keep feeding that same
cup of water to everyone that hungers for the truth
and is thirsty for the truth. – All right, now how
about a retirement age? I know you set a retirement age. Now is that kind of open-ended now that you’re healthy and feeling good? – Yeah, no, no, there was
never an idea of retirement. I was like, it’s better to
burn out than to rust out. But burning out isn’t that fun, either. So you know, I wanna
continue on doing this, but to be responsible. And there were so many
people that reached out and helped me, I had no insurance, and I’d put everything into the ministry. No insurance at all when
I needed bypass surgery. It was gonna be like a
quarter-million dollars, and people donated so
that they would do this, because I wasn’t coming
out of the hospital without the surgery, and I
had no way to pay for it. People paid for it, and
from then on, it’s like I have to pay these people back. How can I do it? I can live my life to
the best of my ability, to teach, continue to teach the truth. That’s the only way that
I can pay them back, and I really feel that
also by managing my health, going to a plant-based whole foods diet and in doing the things
that now I know are right and now I know are reversing this, I know that that is the best
thing that I can do for them. That’s the most honest thing
I can do to pay them back because I could never pay
them back financially. – All right, well, we are

what my neurologist told me when I woke up blind after
a stroke, after surgery, and said the only thing proven
to reverse heart disease is a whole food plant-based diet. That is what I would
